“Thanks for meeting me,” Eliza said, ushering Shelly into her office.

“Where’s Sandra?”

“I gave her the rest of the day off to organize a dinner for the orphans,” Eliza explained. “I need your help with something.”

“S-Sure… But I don’t have much time. Roger doesn’t give me a very long lunch.”

“It shouldn’t take long,” Eliza assured. “Do you think you could track a payment for me?”

“I can try, but I must use police resources. Why don’t you just ask the captain? I’m sure he’d do anything for you…”

Eliza gave her a look. “I want to keep the search quiet.”

“I’m not sure I follow.”

“Look, I’m new in town and I don’t know who I can trust. Money keeps going missing and I just know something bad is going on. But with so much money involved, I’m not sure who I can turn to.”

“So why me?”

Eliza held her gaze. “I’m not sure. I guess it’s because you were the first person in this town to be nice to me.”

“The captain was nice to you. Nice,” Shelly muttered.

“True, but he doesn’t seem willing to invest in this case.”

“True. Anyway, I’m convinced.” Shelly smiled and pulled her laptop out of its bag. “What do you want me to trace?”

“The money that keeps going missing from Little Hands. There are two payments you can trace—one from the previous mayor, and one from me, made last night.”

“On it.” Shelly typed in the numbers that Eliza had given her.

“There’s one more thing,” Eliza pushed. “My sister is visiting. She had a rough welcome. I was hoping to take her sight-seeing after work, but I have an urgent out-of-town appointment that I can’t postpone.”

Shelly raised an eyebrow. “You want me to take her out and show her a good time?”

“Would you mind?”

“Of course not. I’m more than happy to help.”

“Thank you,” Eliza breathed gratefully. “Any update on those payments?”

“Yeah, it looks like they’re being diverted to another account.” Shelly pointed to her screen.

“That looks offshore,” Eliza commented. “Who in this tiny town would have an offshore account?”

Shelly shrugged, equally confused.

“What about the money I sent last night?” Eliza asked.

“That’s gone too. Off to the same account.”

“Can you see who the account belongs to?”

“Nope. They deny my access. It’s been hidden from view. You would probably need a warrant to access the account history. Do you want me to alert the captain?”

“Not yet,” Eliza said, unable to explain why she didn’t want him involved. “Give me time to find out some more information before we approach him with this.”

“If you say so.”

“Now if you will excuse me, I need to get going. I owe you, Shelly!”
